Igor Alabugin
Ph.D.
Distinguished Research Professor
Florida State University (FSU), USA
Igor V. Alabugin is Distinguished Research Professor of Chemistry at Florida State University, where he has led a research program at the interface of organic synthesis, physical organic chemistry, and molecular materials since 2000. He received his B.Sc./M.Sc. and Ph.D. from Moscow State University and carried out postdoctoral research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Alabugin’s research focuses on understanding and controlling chemical reactivity through electronic and stereoelectronic effects. His contributions span alkyne chemistry, radical cascades and fragmentations, stereoelectronic rules for cyclization reactions, photochemistry, carbon-rich molecules and materials, and electron upconversion and electron catalysis. He has authored more than 230 peer-reviewed publications and two books, Stereoelectronic Effects: The Bridge between Structure and Reactivity (Wiley, 2016) and Oxygen: The Key to Stereoelectronic Control in Chemistry (ACS In Focus, 2023).
He has delivered more than 200 invited, keynote, and plenary lectures worldwide. His honors include election as a Fellow of AAAS, a Fulbright Distinguished Chair, the ACS Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award, Markovnikov Medal, Florida Award, George Gamow Award, ACS Southern Chemist Award, and election as a Full Member of the Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine of Florida. He has served as Editor-in-Chief of Chemistry since 2023.
